Prosecutor remembered at courthouse
where he vanished three years earlier

Baltimore NAACP president
calls for fresh Luna inquiry

'There are enough questions about Mr. Luna's death... Why would he leave at the time that he did? Why would he leave some personal items that normally you would take with you? And why would he go into other states and have done what was done to him? ... A full investigation must take place'

December 5 , 2006 -- Having mysteriously vanished from the Baltimore federal courthouse shortly before midnight on December 3, 2003, former federal prosecutor Jonathan Luna was commemorated three years later at the same courthouse where he began his wild midnight ride. A gathering of concerned citizens commemorated Luna beneath a statue of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, at one corner of the Baltimore federal courthouse.

Baltimore NAACP president Marvin Cheatam and others called for a fresh look into the Luna case.

Baltimore NAACP Marvin Cheatam told those gathered, "We would say justice delayed is justice denied. And it is quite clear that there are enough questions about Mr. Luna's death that this issue must be brought back up again. A full investigation must take place. Another autopsy must take place because not only were there multiple stabbings but stabbings in the back."

Cheatam continued, "While there were words that it could have been possibly a (suicide), how does one stab oneself in the back? When you look a the occurences that took place with Mr. Luna, why would he leave at the time that he did? Why would he leave some personal items that normally you would take with you? And why would he go into other states and have done what was done to him?

"So there are enough unanswered questions for anyone to see that a case like this has to be brought back up, and we're going to be joining other agencies, other organizations, imploring our elected officials, on behalf of all of us. Because this could happen to any of us. And answers must be given so that we can at least walk away saying we know what the answers are, we know what happened to Mr. Luna.

"And we say basically that we ask God's blessings on all of us to make sure justice is done in this situation, because right now we contend that justice has not been done for Mr. Luna, his family and his friends. So we will join, and we will come back, if this has to be done every year, then this is something we need to do, because we're seeing this too much. Not just in this state, but other states."
